Pip and the Snowflake

One cold morning, a single snowflake floated down and landed right on Pip's flipper.

Pip looked closely. It had six tiny arms, sparkly as glitter. "You are the most beautiful thing I have ever seen," Pip whispered. "I am going to keep you forever."

Pip carried the snowflake inside to show his friends. But by the time he got to the warm kitchen, the snowflake was gone. Just a little drop of water was left.

Pip felt his eyes get wet too. "My snowflake melted," he said.

Ollie Owl landed on the windowsill. "Some special things can't be kept," Ollie said softly. "They can only be enjoyed — right now, while they are here."

Pip thought about that. Then he put on his red hat, ran outside, and looked up.

Thousands and thousands of snowflakes were falling — every single one different. Pip didn't try to keep them. He just watched them dance, and caught them on his tongue, and laughed.

It was the best snow day ever.

Let's talk about it

  • What happened to the snowflake inside?
  • What did Ollie mean?
  • What is something special you enjoyed today?
